Sheffield runners’ chance to join record-breakers on nationwide torch relay
This October, Sheffield residents will have the chance to help record-breaking ultra runners Adam Holland and Rob Young (aka ‘Marathon Man UK’) carry a ‘torch for peace’ as it heads north through the town on its way from Chesterfield to Barnsley on the third day of the nationwide Run4Peace 2016 (http://www.run4peace.co.uk), a relay covering 1,000km in just ten days.
Rob Young has claimed the World record for the most marathons in a year (370) and the longest run without sleep (373.75 miles). Holland, a previous holder of the World record for the fastest ten marathons in ten days, aims to reclaim it later this year.
The relay torch was first lit and carried 500 miles across Kenya’s conflict-affected North Rift Valley last year during a ‘Walk for Peace’ by some of the World’s top athletes. They included Marathon World record-breaker Wilson Kipsang, pictured with Young and Holland on http://www.run4peace.co.uk – where people can sign up to take part via an interactive map showing the route of the relay. There are 100 spaces for runners to join the pair each day, from 21-30 October (ten spaces per 10km run).
The event is being supported by athletics retailer Up & Running, which has a store in Sheffield. “Up & Running is thrilled to support the Kenya Peace Torch Relay, and members of our staff team are looking forward to taking part,” says General Manager Jonathan Midwood. “It’s an incredible cause, and we’d encourage everyone to get involved.”
All sponsorship raised by participants will go to help UK-based charity the Aegis Trust to establish a school for peace in Northern Kenya, where ethnic violence has left more than 600 dead and driven over 435,000 from their homes since 2014.
“I would urge all to sign up to run for peace and save many lives,” says Wilson Kipsang. “Join us to support and make a difference in Kenya,” said Adam Holland. “It’s very important that we bring stability to the area and also bring peace, not only to Kenya, but worldwide,” added Rob Young.
